I would have to look it up, but I believe the two followed different paths, the velocity of the water as it struck the original canal being deemed insufficient to set up whatever current they deemed necessary to keep the route open.

I have seen maps showing the different paths across the neck of Desoto point, and I recall them intersecting but following different paths across the neck.
