The definitive work on Vicksburg is found in Edwin Bearss' three volume work, The Vicksburg Campaign, Morninghside, 1985.
If you have not done so, a visit to the Vicksburg National Military Park would be well worth your while. The siege line where Lt. Hodo served is well preserved. I prowled all over that area a year ago.

**He was most likely killed by a sharpshooter in the vicinity of the 3rd Louisiana Redan, on the Vicksburg siege line at the Jackson Road.
His records are filed under the surname Hodo.
However, his burial records found in UDC Page 38 lists him as M. D. Hade, died June 20, 1863, buried in Confederate Rest section, Cedar Hill Cemetery, Vicksburg City Cemetery
