James E. Ballard was the subject of a 30 January 2003 post - Mr. John Gillespie reported an entry on Ballard in the book, Duty, Honor, Valor: The Story of the Eleventh Mississippi Infantry, by Steven H. Stubbs. The entry read, "Ballard, James E. - Private; enlisted 13Sep61 at Camp Jones, near Bristoe Station, Virginia, in Company A; present 28Sep62; killed at Gettysburg, 3Jul63; died with $12.50 on person; effects left in charge of Surgeon T. J. Buffington, commanding the Park Hospital at Marietta, Georgia." The mention of someone gathering money indicates Ballard's body was accessible to a Confederate comrade, that is, he did not die in the advance on 3 July, but perhaps was killed or mortally wounded during the artillery exchange prior to the attack. In the book, The University Grays, Company A, 11 Mississippi Regiment, Army of Northern Virginia, 1861-1865, by Maud Morrow Brown, a member of the regiment, Baxter McFarland (Company C) reports that Company A was on the right of the regiment, which is the usual location for the first company.
