This man enlisted in the "Carroll County Rifles" on Apr. 29, 1861, at Carrollton MS. This company was assigned to the 11th Mississippi Regiment as Company "K" and entered Confederate service at Lynchburg VA, May 12, 1861. Hughes' age at enistment is given as 56 -- possibly it should have been 59. He was discharged for senility and old age on Dec. 16, 1861, age at that time given as sixty.

If I remember, the average age for Confederate volunteers was twenty-three, so you can see how unusual a man like Hughes would have been in his regiment. During 1861 he must have easily been the oldest man on roll.
