Issac J. Long enlisted at Benela (now extinct), Calhoun County, MS.

He is also noted as John E. Long in a Calhoun County Probate record filed by his widow, Frances.

Private Long's death was reported to the Second Auditor of the Treasury Department by Asst. Surgeon George Stanley King, General Hospital #4, Richmond on November 18, 1862.

"Private J. I. Long CO G 42nd. Miss. Vols. died of Typhoid Pneumonia on the 14th. inst. His effects were one Knapsack & contents, Haversack and Canteen will remain in charge of Surgeon James B. Read until legally called for."
