Wirt Adams Regt. , Col Wood, Jones Plantation

"June 22, 1863, Lieut.-Col. R. C. Wood, with Adams' Regiment, under Capt. S. B. Cleveland, and Starke's Regiment, under Major McBee, attacked at Jones' plantation a detachment of the Fourth Iowa Cavalry, with one howitzer, under Major Parkell, which had been sent to blockade the road west from Birdsong's ferry on the Big Black. The howitzer was planted at the head of a narrow lane, which was strongly fenced on each side, and the Confederate troopers charged for it while a portion of the command, dismounted, engaged the dismounted Federals in line. "The charge," said Wood, "was gallantly led by Captain Cleveland, commanding Adams' Cavalry, and Captain M. B. Bowie, of the same regiment, whose squadron was in advance. Among the seriously wounded was Capt. W. S. Yerger, who fell while gallantly leading his company. Captain Cleveland was commended for gallantry by Colonel Wood. Parkell's losses in this engagement were 8 killed, 16 wounded and 33 missing."

In Elizabeth Ingraham's diary she reports that Gov. McClernand has made their plantation near Willow Springs his headquarters May 5, 1863 after just having his HQ at Jones' plantation (Claiborne Co. MS). Is this the same place mentioned above? Which Jones plantation? I know there were several wealthy Jones planters in the county - Dr. A. P. Jones, Dudley Jones and Martha jones, wife of Joseph E. Jones.

Thanks for any help. Becky Drake and I are editing Elizabeth's diary with annotations for a reprint that will benefit Champion Hill battlefield preservation.
