I am trying to get a "handle" on a man of that name (Charles A. or C.A.) who worked as a telegraph operator during the war at Mobile, in Virginia, and, post-war, in Memphis (1878). No luck thus far in census research, without knowing origin, date and place of birth, family -- all of which is information I'm seeking. Described in one (undocumented) book as "young" in 1864 and, variously, as a tel op on duty with General R.E. Lee and, elsewhere, as Lee's "cofidential tel op," Charles Gaston was responsible for a spectacular job of tapping Grant's telegraph wire between City Point and Washington, D.C., for an extended period, leading to the famous "beefsteak raid."
