I marked both of the Horton brothers graves with VA stones in a family plot in Providence Cemetery near Tiplersville, Mississippi in Tippah County about 1980. Actually between Tiplersville and Claybeate. This church was started by Raliegh Horton and many descendants still own farms around the church. Basically I was replacing civilian markers that were erected during the war after their father retrieved the remains from Clarksville and Hopkinsville and brought them home. This was stated on the back of the old headstones. I did this for a very close friend that still lives in the area - we were buds in the USAF. For more info contact Hazel Horton of Tiplersville.

The 23d Mississippi was one of those units destined for disaster. Half the unit died of disease; the rest captured at Ft. Donelson, and it doesn't get much better. When organized the whole command was outfitted in butternut uniforms.. The regiment had so much bad luck that even William Faulker referenced the unit in Absolom ! Absolom !

I live 300 miles from the site and last visited 1992.
