Johnson, also known as Silas Brown, who served in the Second Regiment Engineers, Corps De Afrique, later the Ninety-sixth United States Colored Infantry (USCT). Johnson, born a slave in Mississippi, settled in Yazoo County after the war and worked as a farm laborer. His wife, Tibby, also worked as a farm laborer. Johnson's parents were born in Virginia.
