Re: Camp Churchill Clark Mississippi

Bobbie,

Wish I had a direct answer for you, but I can only offer some geographic clues that may, or may not, be of some help. Of course, you will want to pull up one of those Google maps to get the lay of the land around Corinth.

I retrieved much of this information from the compiled service records available through subscription to "Footnote."

4/18 Camp Rives–Rienzi, Ms-HQ 1st bgde 1st Div Army of The West-Gen Henry Little writes to Col Jordan that in compliance with the General's wishes, he and Major Peters & Mr. Williams, scouted south & west of here for a place suitable for camping 25,000 men.
About 5 miles from here by RR, and to the right of it. I found a considerable extent of country forming a low ridge, well ……ed[?] and with spring branches convenient, which I am informed never fail. I think that at least 25,000 men could be camped here, and no camp further than 2-300 yards from water.
I also examined the country around Booneville, some 3 miles further south & on the east side of the road, quite a large body of troops could be camped, should there not be space enough at the other.
I am informed that south and west of the road in a circuitry of 10-15 miles, the country is well supplied with forage.
The troops with their baggage can be loaded from the railroad cars within ½ mile of Booneville or the first mention place.
I also rode about a series of ridges covered with pine timber about 2 miles east of this station & on the other side of Tuscumbia Creek. There is good water at the base of these ridges and they would be a healthy site for our encampment, but there is no forage in the vicinity.
…..I herewith enclose a map of the country we went over hastily drawn by Mr. Williams.
H Little, acting B Gen
PS: Major Peters will explain the accompanying map

4/24 Whitfield’s regiment will proceed to Corinth at once and occupy the ground designed for Hebert’s Bgde until its arrival. [14th Ark is in this same brigade]

5/1 G. O .#18 HQ ARMY OF THE WEST, Camp McIntosh
-The Gen cdg [Van Dorn] announces to the troops his arrival.
-His HQ are established on the road leading from camp to Corinth, about half a mile north of the RR & 1 1/2 miles from Corinth.

5/8 G. O. #20
-Camp Churchill named

5/8 The 14th Ark reorganized at Camp Churchill Clark.

5/9 fight at Farmington

5/14 or 5/15-The 21st Ark-Col Cravens formed by the consolidation of 4 Co’s of McCarver's 14th Ark & 6 Co’s of Lemoyne's 17th Ark
McCarver's regt [bn] --"We camped 2 miles SE of Corinth where the reorganization took place.
[Of course, this is not Power's 14th Ark, but it is an indication of where some units of the Army of West were encamped.]
