Re: Possible Mississippi Officer's Sword

Jim:

I think you are correct about the former owner of the sword being that of Capt. William McCulloch, Co. F commander, 30th Miss. He is mentioned several times in Capt. William Van Davis' small pocket diary that he kept during the last year of the war. That information and some brief biografical information can be found in the book, "Oh for Dixie! The Civil War Diary and Record of Capt. William V. Davis, Thirty Mississippi Regiment, C.S.A." There is no reference in that book as to what happened to Captain MuCulloch after he returned to Mississippi after the war.

If I could locate the address of Captain McCulloch's descendant who owns the sword, my wife and I would gladly send him a free copy of our book, "Oh for Dixie!" Thanks for the very interesting post about the sword and also for your email to me about it. And hope the new job continues to go well. . . . Joe Ashley, Colorado Springs, CO
