Mr. Whitehead:

I was instructed by the Mississippi Department of Archives to contact you with this question, which I had initially presented to them. Do you have any idea as to the identity of the soldier killed at Fort Pemberton (Greenwood, MS) on March 13, 1863? According to General Loring's official report, a Union shell exploded over one of the Rebel cannons (possibly the 6.4-inch rifle) and wounded 3 men, and one of them died after a few hours. A list of Point Coupee Artillery soldiers asserts that Pvt P. McKittrick was killed at Fort Pemberton, but other records claim that he was captured at Vicksburg in July, '63 and ultimately died in the 1890s (and I have seen a picture of his headstone proving that fact), so that rules him out.

How can I find this man's identity? Additionally, how can I determine if other fatalities occurred at Fort Pemberton (since I have heard that others did indeed occur)? Four soldiers (of the 33rd Ms. Inf. Reg.) were killed in the fort while preparing a torpedo, but that was 2 weeks after the engagements with the enemy.

Thanks for any help.

Mark Adkins
