John Capen, age 40,enrolled for duty as a 2nd Corporal in (1st) Company F, 1st Regiment July 5, 1861 at Boggy Depot for a period of 12 months, present at August 31, 1861 muster, no further records

This company was known at various times as Captain Edward Dwight's Company, (1st) Company F, (2d) Company F, and (2d) Company I, 1st Regiment Choctaw and Chicasaw Mounted Rifles.

The 1st Regiment Choctaw and Chickasaw Mounted Rifles (also called Volunteers, Riflemen, and Cavalry) completed its organization July 31, 1861, with ten companies A to K. Many changes were made in company letters, due to the re-organization of some companies and the elimination and substitution of others.

Majs. Willis J. Jones, Mitchell LeFlore, Stephen Loering

The regiment was organized at Scullyville, Choctaw Nation in July 1861
with 1085 men. In May 1862 it had 27 officers and 707 men. The regiment
had six companies of Choctaws, three of Chickasaws and one of
half-breeds. It lost 12 men at Newtonia. It was attached to D. H.
Cooper, T. Walker brigade, Trans-Mississippi Department. The regiment
skirmished in the Indian Territory and lost three men at Poison Spring.
It was included in the surrender of June 23, 1865.
