My family owned and still owns parts of Eight Mile Station, where the Union forces encamped and used a grist mill and saw mill. I was raised on the the Mobile and Ohio railroad, (Gulf, Mobile and Ohio and later Illinois Central Railroad). I used to swim at Eight Mile Creek (the site of the Whistler skirmish) and use the railroad trussel as a spring board. The remember seeing the old trussel post were still on the bottom of the creek when I was little.
