Re: Henry and Stephen Davenport, 42nd and 26th MS

Lisa --

The word appears as 'assassinated' twice in Davenport's military file with the 26th Mississippi, which is quite extensive.

The term first appears in a report filed by George W. Strode, who forwarded Capt. Davenport's commissary returns for Adams Brigade (formerly Tilghman's) from Shubuta MS on June 9, 1864. Strode's report appears in the Confederate Citizens Files.

Davenport's file includes an endorsement from Governor Pettus, who calls him an "energetic and able officer." A note written by Davenport himself says his home was destroyed and all his slaves carried away while he was in captivity after Fort Donelson.
