This is where the Federal census would point you in the right direction. This man could have applied for a pension as a Confederate veteran living in Mississippi. However, he did apply for a pension while living in Fayette County AL. Copies are available here.
Thomas Lyons doesn't have a service file other than a brief one with with the 26th Alabama Regiment. That regiment didn't "come home", but was reassigned to the Army of Tennessee.
