I know Van Dorn wanted to keep him as a corps commander in Mississipi; and I believe Joe Johnston mentioned him as a candidate for the command of a 3rd Corps he hoped to organize at Dalton in 1864. And, this was after Lovell had been shelved for over a year.
Of course, virtually anything Johnston endorsed, including this 3rd corps, was summarily rejected by Davis.
