Based on review of documents found in the service files, here are my notes on Armistead's 16th Confederate Cavalry --

General Leonidas Polk appointed field officers for Armistead’s Regiment on Apr. 18, 1864, at Demopolis, Ala. Companies composed of exempts on duty with the Conscript Bureau or attached to other regiments were ordered to report. Also called Spence’s Regiment, officers and men mustered at Blue Mountain, Ala., June 10, 1864. On Sept. 12, 1864, Armistead forwarded staff nominations to the War Department, but formal appointments were never issued.

On Mar. 24, 1865, the Adjutant and Inspector General revised the designation of this unit, changing it to the 12th Mississippi Cavalry Regiment. However, there is less evidence for this title being employed in the field than the 16th Confederate. On Sept. 12, 1864, Col. Armistead referred to it as “unnumbered”. The regiment surrendered at Gainesville, Ala., May 14, 1865.
