Our family lore holds that there were 3 McDaniel brothers, William, Elihu and Elijah (my ancestor) who fought for the Confederacy, that the elder brothers, William and Elihu,fought at Shiloh and William was killed. Word of his death made Elijah, then only 11, to run away and join up with his brother. Census records confirm Elijah Elkins McDaniel was born in 1851 in Pontotoc, MS., and that he and Elihu survived the war, married the Bolen sisters, and became cotton growers in the Mississippi Delta. The MS records show 2 soldiers named Elijah McDaniel, one in the 13th Mississippi Infantry, the other in the Jeff Davis Cavalry Brigade. According to some family members, however, they fought in the 19th TN Cavalry. Can anyone point me to helpful information that might lead me to Elijah's unit?
