My g-g-granfather,James Green, was a private in the 3rd Battalion,Co.B.at Vicksburg.He served briefly as Orderly Sergeant in Co.H,returning to Co.B. Some family members say that he was a surgeon at Vicksburg,but there is no indication of his having served in any medical capacity in his service file.

Wouldn't such service have noted? I have been puzzled about this for along time .

I would appreciate it very much if someone could shed some light on this , as his Nat. Archives records do not show any indication of his being any thing but a private, & Orderly Sergeant.
