I believe those rumors were started by a reporter who was actually serving as a senior staff member for Gen. Rosecrans at the time. Given Rosecrans' knowledge of the story, and the absence of a rebuke, I suspect we can chalk the story up to Rosecrans trying to dodge responsiblity for the SNAFU at Iuka.
