William Preston Henderson - Pvt Co A 34th/37th Inf

William Preston Henderson, signed on as a Pvt, 25 Feb 1862, with the 'Tippah Rangers', Co. A 34th/37th Mississippi Inf.

He appears on Company Muster Roles as absent - detailed to the Division Ordinance Train (as a Teamster) - Withers' Divison, Polk's Corps, Army of Tennessee, Walthall's Brigade from 29 August 1862 to 28 April 1863.

After returning to Co. A of the 34th, he is listed on muster roles as absent, captured at Lookout Mountain on 24 Nov 1863 by the forces of Major General Thomas.

Records show that he was forwarded to Louisville Kentucky for exchange on 30 Nov 1863, then discharged to Rock Island on 3 Dec 1863. He was confined on Rock Island as a POW from 5 Dec 1863 until being transferred for exchange on 25 March 1865.

I am looking for information on where he would have served over the 8 months that he was attached to Withers' Division.

I am also looking for some reading material on Lookout Mountain and Rock Island Prison. If anyone can point me in the direction of some references or books, etc., I would be greatful.

And lastly, any information that may be out there about the individual would be most welcome.

Thanks.

Guy
