The October incident is the one that I can prove McPherson captured a Confederate spy (J.D. Robertson), utilized him for information, and then released him. McPherson, however, left no written indication that this ever happened.

I suspect the same thing happened in May 1863. Same commander, same theatre, different month.

I'm almost certain I have seen a document detailing Captain Yerger's attempt to deliver Johnston's order to Pemberton, explaining that Yerger handed the order to a Pemberton staffer after failing to find Pemberton's HQ. It's hard to imagine Yerger doing this if the person was a stranger.
