Desperate help needed

In Johnston's account of the Vicksburg Campaign, he claims that he put the order for Pemberton to move from Edwards to Clinton in the hands of a Captain Yerger of Wirt Adams' command. Not an order issued in triplicate as alleged by Grant, but a single copy of the order.

Somewhere, I just *know* I have come across an explanation that Yerger rode all night after the hard rain to find Pemberton, but found only washed out bridges and unpassable fords. Exhausted, he placed the order in the hands of a man he thought was a Pemberton staffer.

I cannot now find this account *anywhere*. I'm almost certain I didn't dream it up. Has anyone seen such an account? Any suggestions on where I might look to find it?
