My great grandfather served in the 29th Mississippi. Both regiments were in Walthall's Brigade and were together at least until Lookout Mountain. He was James K Polk Bland of Company A and was from Oxford.

The 24th and 29th were at Murfreesboro, Chickamauga and Lookout Mountain together. My ggf was captured at Lookout Mountain and spent the rest of the war trying not to starve to death at the Rock Island Prison.

By the way, if you haven't been to the Chickamauga/Lookout Mountain Battlefield, you should go. Just tell them what unit your relative was in and they can tell you where he was throughout the whole battle. They even showed me the area where my ggf spent the night between the 1st and 2nd day of fighting. Very interesting stuff. Lost a lot of men from these regiments at Alexander's Bridge at Chickamauga on the first day of the battle. The bridge was defended by an Indiana company with repeating rifles. Lost 105, I think.
