Thanks for sharing this info with me Bret. I really enjoy reading first hand accounts of what was going on during the war. It's amazing in those trying times that they could still have a laugh every now and then, but I'm sure (as you said), it helped to lift their spirits and keep them going. I had an ancestor in Cobb's Legion Cavalry Battalion who was sent down south from VA to the Savannah area with a detachment of dismounted men. They probably did quite a bit of dismounted fighting around Savannah, too, and even further during the Carolinas Campaign before they could procure remounts.
