George Canning of the 1st Mississippi Cavalry.

Is there anyone who is doing major research on the 1st Mississippi Cavalry, and who has some knowledge of a George Canning who served in company G, of this organisation? I want to find out if he was an aide de camp to General (Bishop) Polk, and if he was wounded at Shiloh. A George P. Canning, who was sergeant of Marines aboard the cruiser, CSS SHENANDOAH, indicated that he had been aide de camp to General Polk, and was shot in the lung and wounded, at Shiloh. This wound later took his life, through complications, and he was buried at sea, from the SHENANDOAH. I only know of one George Canning who served in the Confederate Army (the one in the 1st Mississippi Cavalry), and I believe that this may be the same person.
George P. Canning had a brother in Australia, and went there to recuperate, and later joined the SHENANDOAH from Melbourne.
Any assistance in this matter would help with further research on the mysterious sergeant George P. Canning.
