Thanks a lot for all of that good info on the responsiblities of a Confederate Adjutant. I'm not sure why Oscar Stuart had the rank of Sargent Major. It could be that he was appointed as Adjutant at a later time.
I know that his marker in the Fredericksburg Confederate Cemetery says "Adj. O.E. Stuart."
