Thanks for the info. After some more research I discovered that evidently Oscar Stuart was both Adjutant to Col. Burt and Sargent Major of Co. K 18th Miss. Obviously he did much more than shuffle papers - He was wounded in the arm in the Battle of Leesburg (Balls Bluff) and later was killed on May 3rd 1863 at Marye's Heights during the Chancellorsville Campaign. The link below contains some very interesting insight into the events surrounding the Battle of Leesburg, and the months shortly afterwards.
Two of my distant cousins are mentioned in this diary - Sgt.Major and Adj. Oscar E. Stuart and his brother, Capt. James Hardeman Stuart (Jeb Stuarts signal officer at the time).
Capt. Stuart was killed 30 Aug 1862 at the Second Battle of Manassas.
