A fairly common German name, but not often found in the Southern states. Note a young man by a very similar name living in Madison County MS in 1870. I recently came across a young man who served as an officer in a Texas unit. He had just arrived from Germany in 1861, so that explained why he didn't appear on the 1860 census schedule. Perhaps something like it is at work here.
