Hospital registers were used to record the name, unit and condition of patients. Orderly sergeants were with their companies and did not keep lists of men in different hospitals. Once a company member was sent to a hospital, it wasn't possible to track him except by hearsay. If a soldier died in a hospital, there was no way to communicate information to his unit or family. We're fortunate to know as much as we do.
