Chris:

You might try this 5th MS Infantry researcher, whose name I got from a unit researcher's page: Len E. Reinker at Lenrein@aol.com. I do not know Len personally.

You might also look at a capsule history of the 5th MS at:
http://mississippiscv.org/MS_Units/5th_MS_INF.htm.

Looking in MS CS Grave Registrations, I don't find Stephen Miller Steele, but I do find:

"STEELE, S. E. 5th MS Inf. 1818-1899 MS Nesh," which means that S.E. Steele was born in MS in 1818, died in 1899, and is buried in Neshoba County, MS.

Checking further, I find that this S.E. Steele is not S.E. Steele at all, but Sewell W. Steel, 2nd Lt., Co. B, 5th MS Infantry, and that this company was raised in Neshoba County, MS. This is almost certainly a relative of yours.

I do find an S.E. Steel as a Brevet 2nd Lt. in Co. H, 1st MS Cavalry. There were two "1st MS Cavalries," so I don't know which one this man was in. Co. H of one was raised in Lowndes County, MS; Co. H of the other was raised in Bolivar Counties, MS.

Since Winston County abutts Neshoba County, these, again, may be some of your relations.

Looking in MS CS Pension Applications, I do not find Stephen Miller Steel(e).

Wish I could have helped you more! -- Jim Huffman, Gainesville Vols, SCV Camp 373, Pearl River County, MS
