My great-great granfather, Stephen Miller Steele (usually spelled Steel in civil war documents) served with the 5th Mississippi infantry, Co. D. This unit was raised in Winston County. I have ordered his records, and the muster rolls end in 1863, with him serving with Gen Bragg.
I have other info that indicates he survived the war, dying in Winston County in 1866 at age 36. I am in the process of ordering the books on cd by Betty Wiltshire to hopefully fill in some blanks, but understand there are occassionally researchers lurking here who don't mind looking up some info and posting in return. If anyone has the time and inclination I would greatly appreciate any info there is to be had. If not, thanks anyway, glad to find this site.
