Hi David,
I work as a tour guide at Fort Davidson State Historic Site at Pilot Knob, Missouri. We have, in the site library, copies of the " Normal Picket ", a newspaper put out by the 33rd Illinois Infantry when they were stationed at Pilot Knob. Captain Francis "Frank" Manter is mentioned in issue #2, 1 January,1862. In the previous issue, Manter's Battery was referred to as Schofield's Battery and the editor was making a correction. He said " Of course it should have been called Manters Battery after its gallant commander, whom the ladies declare to be the finest looking officer at this post and whom everybody acknowledges to be one of the very best. " Copied this directly from issue # 2. There were 8 issues published from December 24, 1861 to February, 1862.
