My contact with Breihan was by mail and was regarding a book I was writing on Quantrill (Quantrill's Raiders in Texas, Eakin Press, 2003. On the cover of his book, Quantill and his civil war guerrillas, Breiham shows the picture of San four times, but at that time, I considered it to be authentic. Inside the book he also shows the picture and it is captioned, "Rare photo of Sam Hildebrand never before published" but he gives no credit.
