Allison murders, Camden Co. 1863

My gg-uncle, Hugh Allison, his wife Sarah & some children were murdered at their farm in Camden County, MO around 1863 by a band of guerrillas. According to our oral family history, Hugh's wife and children were tortured and murdered one by one in front of his eyes, as the guerrillas tried to get him to confess where his money was hidden. He had no money, just a bunch of farmland. When he didn't tell them, he was murdered, too. I believe one teenage child escaped and went to get help.

I have been trying to find out if he was killed by Jay-hawkers or Bushwhackers. He was 52 yrs old, b. 1811 in TN. I found one tiny reference to this indicent about 28 years ago, but have misplaced the info. I think it was in a book of MO newspaper articles.

Any ideas on where I can search to find out more?
