Ironton MO - Wm. C. Byrd in Iron Co...

Hi Walt -

nope, my gg-gf Wm. Carroll Byrd (1860 census for Union Twsp, Iron Co. MO) was born ~1815. He DID have a son named Wm. C. Byrd, but I am not sure he would have been 19 in Aug. 1864; will need to check my files.

Was the unit you mentioned (Union?) made up from men in the Iron Co. area?????

Apparently another one of Wm. Carroll Byrd's sons (Alfred) was in the EMM during 1865-6 however........hmmmmm....

Wm. Carroll Byrd put all of his land there in Iron Co. into the hands of a certain Justice of the Peace named Shaver during 1860, he then bought it all back for only ONE DOLLAR (!?!?!?!) in March 1863 before immediately selling it to a certain Roberts.

I was told by one of the Iron Co. historians several years ago that this holding land for others during the CW years was fairly common among southern sympathizers there in Iron Co. - does this jive with what you know????

thanks for your expertise and scholarship,

Kenneth Byrd
