Mr. Gates, I frankly don't believe any of this. There are no references in the CSR's of men lost from Cofee's command during this time period. Also, what alleged union cavalry regiment was he talking about? Killing and wounding 54 and capturing 43 is no small thing for that part of the country. The union Cavalry regiments, or parts of that were available at the time were from the 2nd, 6th & 9th Kansas, and the Missouri State Militia brigade (3rd, 4th & 14th MSM), none of which lost that kind of man power during that time period. The fight that Newman describes would have been a fight on par with what happened at first Newtonia, and we are talking about only one regiment. One thing to keep in mind also, Coffee's regiment was not fully organized until the day of the fighting at Newtonia. Within the week they are involved in this kind of action, I seriously doubt it.
