Bruce, just to let you know a little about the German language newspaper:
I copied one of the articles that I was interested in and gave it to a German-born woman I know. She was unable to translate it accurately as it was in ‘Old German’. Her mother from Germany happened to be visiting her and she translated from ‘Old German’ to ‘New German’ and then my friend translated it into English. It turned out to be pretty much a standard article that was that was available in other newspapers – so the information wasn’t worth the effort. This doesn’t mean there might be some interest in some articles – it might be interesting to find an article where St Louis German soldiers were involved and see if there would be a more elaborate write-up.
(Supposedly, one of the citizens killed at the Centralia Massacre was a St Louis German - Meyers, I think, I don’t remember right off hand – but it might be interesting to look through the German newspaper to see if there are any articles on the Centralia affair and if any look promising due to their length. Something like that might be worth the effort.)
