Thank you for the suggestions and references. I have read some about Sen. Gwin and Judge Terry. I think that it may be Judge Terry, referred to as Col. Terry who is mentioned in a Jan 1861 letter by Rev. Cornelius Yager in Contra Costa Co. to Elizabeth (E. E.) Watts. There was another Terry family in Mariposa so it's hard to tell to whom Elizabeth was referring. Some of Elizabeth's former neighbors and acquaintences from Cass and Jackson Co., MO and some of her daughter's husband's relatives settled in Contra Costa Co. which I've read was a hotbed of Confederate supporters so I think that these may be some of the men she is refering to in the 1865 letter.
