Marian, I do remember reading something on California Confederates who went to Mexico to few years ago. I donít recall the source at the moment. But if I remember correctly Hubert Howe Bancroftís multi-volume History of California contains a few references, as well as many general ones on Confederate sympathizers in California. Iím not familiar with any Confederate colonies that were started in Sonora, although California Senator William Gwin did attempt, or at least propose the settlement of southerners in Sonora following the war. Gwinís story can be found in numerous sources, and especially in the book: Between to Empires by Thomas Lately.
Lastly, there is Californian and Confederate officer David Terry who went to Mexico following the war, the details of which are in the book: David S. Terry of California, Dueling Judge.
