Matt, I have sat on this information and documents for a long time. Shelby's great raid was a morale booster but not much else can be said for it. In researching the various archives I found the doucments in the County historical societies and archives. I haven't put all the pieces togethr yet, but it would seem that during the week of 2October to 9 October 1863, the week of Quantrells fight at Baxter Springs, there was much more going on with this raid than what Shelby has talked about. An example is that there is not a single raid that doesn't have missing money involved. I am not implying that Shelby had anything to do with it, but in each instance, such as the $75K missing the night after Mine Creek, he is one of the officers signing off on its loss. It would seem to me that the reasons for the charges of murder at Neosho was justified as Shelby was in command, but would such charges see the inside of a court? I don't think so, especially after Shelby had left for Mexico. After he returns he eventually becomes the U.S. Marshall of the Western District of Missouri, which pretty much kills any investigation of charges against him. I would be interested in your conclusions if you can obtain the same material.
