I've got her married to Francis H. Horn, servied with the 7th PEMM Co. A, enrolloed Stockton MO. Captured and sworn by the enemy Oct 6 1863 as stated by his service card. Entered Federal service with 15th MO Cav Volunteers Nov 1 1863, Mustered Out July 9th, 1865 Springfield

Now the verbal folklore:
Virginia married the first time at 15 yrs. to Frances Horn. Her first was a baby when she made a long night horse back ride trying to reach the town her husband was being held prisoner. The underground had brought her word of a band of guerrillas planning to hang him since he had been caught a spy. They hung him at sunrise and she was too late due to a swollen river she had to cross. She and Jacob met when he asked to quarter his men on her plantation. She having met him outside the door with a loaded shotgun. Only she , her small daughter and an old woman slave were all alone. The others having drifted away. Source: Bessie Hoover Mumford.

Virginia was a twin.

Thus the two stories don't quite jive but certainly both have him being taken by the enemy....Time to dig into Bruce Nichols books.
