Zimmerman, George Rufus

I'm on the trail of a diary written by Mahala Zimmerman of Glen Allen, Bollinger County. Seems her husband was George Rufus Zimmerman who is listed as a Capt. 4th Regiment 1st Division MSG in the NPS Soldiers and Sailors system but I can't find a speck of him on the online SOS database.

Family lore has it he was dragged from his house August 24/26 1864 and shot in front of his family, details supposedly in the diary about when and where and what he did during "trips to the woods". I've not seen the diary but have had two different family members relate they have and are trying to obtain copy for me.

I've found him in 1860 census, marriage record in Cape County to Mahala Kinder (part of the Kinder Limbaugh clan from west Cape County, same area that Rush Limbaugh Sr. came from.)

I 'm suprised there is nothing in the SOS files wondered if anybody had any info on unit or person.

Thanks John R.
