Re: Wm. T. Anderson's Uniform & Rank

question for ya bruce.. i agree that the "prescribed" uniform is the black overshirt.. and as you stated, i am sure it was difficult to stick to that in their situation.. if you look at the photos of the men like jesse james (taken in summer of '64 in platte city you see a light colored garment and metal bead work) ,frank james (taken in "63 and also shows a checkered overshirt and no decorations to speak of) you see men that fought with anderson and did not have the prescribed black overshirt.. even frank james in his book says that the black over shirt was the uniform of choice.. my great, great grandfather who was also with anderson did not have the black overshirt in his photos either.. cole younger also mentions the black overshirt in his interview in the early 1900's

but, judging by the newspaper article you printed, it must have been fairly common to have the black overshirt along with other colors.. have you been able to find many aacounts of guerrilla dress by their enemy?.. i found the newspaper article very interesting and would like to see any others that you might have found since i have had little luck.. it would help greatly in a project i have coming up.. thanks for any help..
