Let me elaborate. Charles R. "Doc" Jennison formed the 7th Kansas Cavalry in October, 1861 as part of Senator jkim Lane's Brigade. Known as "Redlegs" for their distinctive red leggings these "soldiers", Kansas "Jayhawkers", were the Union equivalent of Quantrill, Anderson, and Todd, preying upon anyone and everything. These men raided into Missouri, burning and leaving and leaving only the chimneys of houses standing. As the war progressed there were more chimneys than houses standing in the areas where the "Jayhawkers" raided. This type of raiding spilled over into northern Arkansas, leaving the same "calling card" as it were. It was said, probably a bit sarcastically, that the chimneys were "monuments" in honor of Jennison's operations. Hence the name "Jennison's Monuments". Jennison was later removed from command of the 7th Kansas but formed the 15th Kansas in 1864. Since the type of actions taken by Jennison later became policy for the Union Army as a whole, I guess that you could say Jennison was ahead of his time.
