According to the St. Louis Globe-Democrat dated Feb. 6, 1863 it refers to Surgeon D. Abby (Abbey) of the 29th Missouri as dying on the Von Phul on Jan. 28, 1863. At the bottom of the article it stated that 19 of the men were buried on Island No. 81, seven were buried on Island No,. 16, Three were buried at Young's Point & the las nine to die were buried at St Louis. Dr. Abby was part of the first 19 who died and so should be buried on Island No. 81.

P.S. Island 81 would be much further south from here. I suppose you know you the Federal Government will furnish a memorial marker if you can find the owner of the island. I am looking into putting up a memorial marker to the 7 men who were buried here. Do you have a picture of Dr. Abbey?
