Shaw's Shop Skirmish
In Response To: Story you might like ()

Very timely post. In the past week I completed putting together a file on this Sept. 18, 1864 skirmish, compiling nine different sources talking about it that all together add up to a pretty complete picture.

Here's an interesting, fairly detailed one that appeared in the Louisville (Ky) Journal on October 3, 1864--

A Camp of Militia Surprised by Todd's Guerrillas -- On Sunday week last, Todd, the guerrilla, with about 100 men, surprised a camp of thirty of the Ray county militia, under Lieutenant Ralston, near Shaw's shop, in Ray county, Mo. The men were taken completely by surprise, and, before they could recover, six of their number had been killed. The remainder managed to escape, but lost their horses, guns, etc. Lieutenant Ralston received thirteen balls in his clothes, but miraculously escaped. One of the bushwhackers was so seriously wounded that he died the next day. The bushwhackers selected out a number of the best horses, which they took with them, and killed the remainder. They also destroyed the camp equipage, provisions, etc., belonging to the militia, and left in the direction of Carroll county. The names of the militia killed were Wiley Harris, Napoleon Petty, N.O. Lozier, John H. Phillips, Joseph Simons, and Elias McBee.
