He was killed riding with William Quantrill in a skirmish near Westport, MO against 3 companies of Federal troops from Kansas.
"During this fight in the lane, Al Wyatt's horse also became unmanageable and ran into the Fedrals. Wyatt was shot in the breast and instantly killed. He has only been with us a few days. I took his spurs and sent them to his wife. We tied the bodies of Captain Scott and Al Wyatt across their saddles and, leading their horses, took them to a graveyard, and, wrapping their blankets around them, buried them." FWIW he died before the jail collapse and Lawrence.
