Majors' Battalion, Missouri State Guard

Can anybody offer insight into Majors Battalion, Missouri State Guard. It appears to have been formed before all the MSG Divisions fleshed out and solidified later in 1861. Probably from north central or northeast Missouri circa July/August, meaning it would likely have ended up in the 2nd Division or 3rd Division.

I do find a Col. J.P. Major in command of the 3rd Division's Cavalry Regiment during the final quarter of 1861, so it may have been him. But I'm trying to sort out the make-up of the battalion that existed a few months earlier before that regiment was finalized.

Maybe something shows up in Bartel's "Forgotten Men," which is hard to get ahold of these days.
